As a Texas homeowner, you need to know the common spiders that you might find in your home. Spiders certainly have a beneficial utility in nature but having them around our homes is not a good thing. Spiders can be a real nuisance in and around our homes with their webbing and the “fear factor” for a lot of people can be even worse. Here’s a list of the most common poisonous and non-poisonous spiders in Texas.

House Spiders

House spiders are the most common spiders found in home across the nation. Due to Texas’ warm climate, homeowners may find more house spiders in their home neighboring states.

House spiders aren’t poisonous and don’t pose a real threat to homeowners, outside of cobwebs. They’re typically yellowish brown with dark markings and can be found hiding in their webs waiting for prey.

Wolf Spiders

Wolf spiders are one of the bigger spiders found in Texas. They are typically brown, grey, or tan with legs covered in hair.

One unique feature of wolf spiders is they don’t create webs, they create burrows in the ground when they’re on the hunt.

Brown Recluse Spiders

Brown recluse spiders are poisonous spiders with a small violin-shaped marking on top of it’s body. As the name states, they are brown, typically light brown, spiders with thin long legs.

Although these spiders are poisonous they aren’t too aggressive unless provoked. If you see a brown recluse in your home, call a spider exterminator immediately.

Black Widow Spiders

Black widows are one of the most famous poisonous spiders in the nation thanks to Marvel Studios. They’re known for their red hour glass shape on their backs and “messy” untraditional spider web shapes.

Although known as one of the deadliest spiders, black widow spiders aren’t too aggressive unless their defending themselves. Again, don’t risk your family’s health if you see a black widow, contact an exterminator right away.

Spider Control Treatment

There are several things you can do to keep spiders from getting into your home or business, the most important is to practice good cleaning habits. Pests of all kinds thrive in cluttered environments.

Cleaning up deprives them of access to food and hiding places and taking down spider webs discourages invaders from taking up residence. Outdoor cleanup is essential as well—get leaves, grass clippings, woodpiles and other potential spider hangouts away from the exterior walls to reduce habitat space and deter entry.
